I typed a little more up today, reaching Chapter 17: Oh, Daddy!
Jack realizes based on Megan’s description who the baby’s father is. He is cornered by Taylor, who says Shauna took something that belongs to him, and he believes Jack has it. Taylor threatens Jack, and says he will get it back, no matter what.
The title of this blog post, is inspired from a line in my book, where Jack is thinking if the Devil were real, he’d come in the skin of a handsome man like Taylor. This scene was inspired, in part, by a dream I had, where I saw a handsome blonde man, who turned to look at me. He smiled, and he was also holding an apple. As soon as I saw him, I knew he was the devil. The devil will show himself, in whatever way he thinks/knows we will find appealing.
Taylor’s character is a representation of the devil and the evil supernatural side. He is a thorn in Jack and Val’s side, the moment he enters the book. Taylor is an owner of a new local club, but also a drug dealer, who sets his sights on Jack, fighting to pull him back into the sinful lifestyle he is fighting against.
In a scene that’s representing a battle for Jack’s soul, the evil trying to use the temptation of substance and sex/lust/desire, to secure him. While the good shows itself as his wife: what he really wants, and who he really loves, and the good frees him from the evil that had a hold on him.
At that moment, Jack realizes it wasn’t a dream, it was real. And he knows what he wants, and isn’t tempted by another woman (also a demonic figure in disguise) he’s done with that temptation – he only wants his wife. The drugs remain the final stronghold for him.
I love to write the scenes where it is showing and paralleling the spiritual world, the fight that does exist in our lives – the spiritual warfare. I’ve realized it just wouldn’t be one of my books, without that!
What aspects of your writing contain strong supernatural or spiritual themes? How do you utilize or tell these parts? (if any)
