Today I was writing the scene when Dave sees an old classmate, Gary, dancing with Christie. The problem he has is Gary was a jerk in school, and all hands, so when he sees him trying to be this way with Christie, he tries to intervene.
Things go down hill from here, as Christie clearly heard him say earlier he didn’t want to dance with her. So she gets mad that he took her away from a guy who did, just because he didn’t like him.
Christie told him off, believing that things might be different, and tells him it’s easier to pretend over the phone (saying that he did), but that he can’t in person.
And Dave is like, well problem solved, don’t have to worry about that anymore. But he felt like a little piece of him also died, and his chink in his armor slid back into place.
After Ruby dumped him, right after he found out she was pregnant, he’s sworn off women, wanting to solely focus on getting his child. But with Christie it’s been difficult, he is attracted to her, against his better judgement, and sees that she is different than Ruby, not just pretending.
I felt sad for Dave when I wrote tonight, because he thinks he’s making it easier on himself, but in the long term, he isn’t. He’s building walls and closing himself off. 🙁
